OVERVIEW

Step into the rainforest jungle of Danum Valley Field Centre, for the ultimate Borneo Experience!

If you are a keen naturalist or adventure-seeker and are content with the bare necessities of clean and comfortable facilities, Danum Valley Field Centre is for you!

Approximately 80 metres west from Lahad Datu on Sabah’s east coast, the field centre is accessible by road and the journey takes at least two hours. It is the habitual grounds to over 500 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians living relatively untouched. The hot and humid jungle deems with a variety of towering tropical trees, lingering lianas, exotic orchids, and overhanging epiphytes.

Take this opportunity to feed your curiosity and immerse yourself in a variety of activities for that quintessential Bornean experience! Start the day observing early-morning wildlife as you climb up a tree-hide, take a dip into the river to escape the midday heat or trek your way up to Bukit Atur to catch one of Borneo’s best sunrises! For the adventurous, you may opt for the longer hiking trails. And for the night owls, nightly walks may suit your fancy for a chance to spot some nocturnal wildlife. For something a little bit more on the leisure side, recharge and unwind in a stretcher hammock by the base of a waterfall!

LOCATION / HOW TO GET HERE

The Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC), which is housed within the Danum Valley Conservation Centre, is situated approximately 80 metres west of Lahad Datu town along Sabah's east coast.

The field centre is accessible by road and the journey takes at least two hours. The route to the field centre features a combination of both paved roads and gravel roads, and the journey is frequently used by heavy vehicles such as logging trucks. Despite the presence of heavy traffic, the road conditions are generally good, making the trip to the field centre relatively straightforward.

Malaysian home-style Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are served in a dining hall and on a veranda adjacent to the resthouse.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre / Night Drive


  • 0800hrs
    Meet up at Lahad Datu Hotel / Airport and transfer to DVCA via 4WD or van. Briefing on the programme prior to departure.

  • 1130hrs
    Expected to arrive at DVCA Reception & Information Building, register and check-in.

  • 1230hrs
    Lunch provided at Resthouse Dining Hall.

  • 1400hrs
    Take a walk along the 500 metre self-guided nature trail, and get to know the rainforest, marvel at its beauty and experience the pristine ambience of the rainforest as it has been for hundreds of years. Proceed to trek to the one of the old burial caves of long gone communities which includes radio carbon analysis on a child’s femur dating back to A.D.1670 and a coffin made of Bornean Iron Wood (Belian) from A.D. 1210.

    Return to DVFC. (Rest)

  • 1900hrs
    Dinner served at Resthouse Dining Hall.

  • 2100hrs
    “Night Drive” to observe nocturnal wildlife. (If weather permits)
  • 0000hrs
    Lights Off. Overnight at Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC).

Day 2 - Trek to Tembaling Waterfall / Night Jungle Walk


  • 0700hrs
    Breakfast served at Resthouse Dining Hall.

  • 0830hrs
    Grab your packed lunch and begin trek to Tembaling Waterfall and marvel at one of the world’s oldest rainforest rich with flora and fauna. The trek takes approximately 2 hours. If the weather permits, you may take a refreshing swim in the cold, unpolluted rainforest stream. Keep your binoculars at the ready because there are ample opportunities for bird watching.

  • 1400hrs
    Return to DVFC and continue bird watching activities.

  • 1900hrs
    Dinner served at Resthouse Dining Hall. (Rest)

  • 2100hrs
    Night walk to observe nocturnal wildlife. (If weather permits)
  • 0000hrs
    Lights Off. Overnight at DVFC.

Day 3 - Danum Valley Exploration / Night Jungle Walk


  • 0700hrs
    Breakfast at Resthouse Dining Hall.

  • 0830hrs
    Discover more about Danum Valley. Free time at your own leisure.

  • 1230hrs
    Lunch at Resthouse Dining Hall.

  • 1400hrs
    Continue bird watching activities.

  • 1900hrs
    Dinner at Resthouse Dining Hall. (Rest)

  • 2100hrs
    Night walk to observe nocturnal wildlife. (If weather permits)
  • 0000hrs
    Lights Off. Overnight at DVFC.

Day 4 - Hike to Bukit Atur / Danum Valley / Lahad Datu


  • Wake up as early as 0430hrs for 4x4 drive to Bukit Atur and be among the first to greet the first ray of the sun as it touches the valley (optional at a fee) or rise at 0600hrs for another morning walk with your nature guide.

  • Return to center for your hearty breakfast and afterwards, rest or embark on a trail nearby the centre.
  • 1030hrs
    Pack your belongings for check out time at 1030hrs, depart DVFC for your onwards travel to Lahad Datu.
