5D4N Danum Valley Birdwatching with INFAPRO Conservation Stay

Overview of Location

Embark on a 5D4N birdwatching expedition in Danum Valley, designed for passionate birders, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Your base is INFAPRO, a reforestation hub in the Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, adjacent to the Danum Valley Conservation Area. With private, fan-cooled resthouses and 24-hour electricity, INFAPRO offers a peaceful, comfortable stay, a step up from DVFC’s field-station facilities and a more affordable choice compared to luxury lodges like Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Each day begins at dawn with 4x4 safari drives into the rainforest, timed to coincide with the morning chorus of hornbills, pittas, and broadbills. Guided treks through primary and regenerating forests bring you close to rare species such as the Great Argus, Helmeted Hornbill, and Rhinoceros Hornbill, alongside many of Borneo’s colourful endemics. At night, walks and drives reveal a different cast of wildlife, from owls and nightjars to civets and flying squirrels.

With its location along a natural wildlife corridor linking INFAPRO and DVFC, your stay maximises opportunities to observe both rare and nocturnal species. Ending with a sunrise over Bukit Atur’s mist-cloaked canopy, this itinerary combines world-class birding with the chance to directly support rainforest restoration in one of Southeast Asia’s richest ecosystems.

LOCATION / HOW TO GET HERE

Just 11 kilometres from Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC), INFAPRO offers a quieter, more spacious alternative to staying inside the main research hub. Originally established as a reforestation project, this site now doubles as a comfortable base for exploring one of Borneo’s most iconic rainforests. With larger rooms, ensuite bathrooms, and 24-hour electricity, INFAPRO caters to travellers seeking a more relaxed, mid-range experience without compromising access to Danum Valley’s incredible biodiversity.

While accommodation is based at INFAPRO, most guided activities take place inside DVFC. Trek along established jungle trails, where rare bird species, orangutans, and towering dipterocarp trees await at every turn. After dark, the roads around INFAPRO become a hotspot for nocturnal wildlife. Night drives may reveal secretive species like marbled cats, flat-headed cats, leopard cats, and even the elusive Bornean clouded leopard, along with sightings of Western tarsiers, slow lorises, and binturongs.

INFAPRO features two resthouse options that include attached bathrooms with hot showers. Meals are served buffet-style at the nearby dining hall, with special dietary needs accommodated upon request. Whether you’re here for photography, wildlife, or simply to slow down in nature, INFAPRO delivers a rewarding Danum experience with space to breathe.
