OVERVIEW
Located in the expansive Sabah's largest protected lowland rainforest, Borneo Rainforest Lodge is an exclusive retreat set along the Danum River in the Danum Valley Conservation Area. Covering 43,800 hectares, this untouched tropical sanctuary in Eastern Sabah is a biodiverse haven home to over 340 bird species, 124 mammals, 72 reptiles, 56 amphibians, and an astonishing density of plant species. The lodge offers 31 chalets for up to 60 guests, providing a serene and intimate experience with full-board amenities.
LOCATION / HOW TO GET THERE
Easily accessible, Lahad Datu is the nearest town to the Danum Valley Conservation Area and can be reached from Sandakan, Tawau, and Kota Kinabalu.
Buses to Lahad Datu can be taken from Kota Kinabalu, Semporna, Sandakan, and Tawau.
Daily flights from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu are available via MasWings.
From Lahad Datu, the journey to Borneo Rainforest Lodge spans 97km and approximately 2 hours, with a combination of sealed (15km) and gravel (82km) roads.
For a more comfortable journey, you may wish to consider a private tour with private charter vehicle.

Itinerary
Day 1: Danum Valley Conservation Area / Borneo Rainforest Lodge / Nature Trail / Canopy Walkway / Night Safari Drive
- Pick-up from hotel lobby or Lahad Datu Airport and drive 2½ hours to Danum Valley Conservation Area.
- Check in at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, followed by an introduction and safety briefing.
- Explore the surrounding nature trails on guided walks in the rainforest, experience the Canopy Walkway 360 metres long and 27 metres high, and embark on night safari drives to spot nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2: View Point / Coffin Cliff / Natural Jacuzzi / Water Tubing / Night Walk
- Rise to the songs of Bornean Gibbons, signalling the start of a new day in the ancient rainforests of Danum Valley.
- Kick off your day with a guided trek to the View Point and Coffin Cliff, an ancient indigenous Kadazandusun burial site.
- Take a refreshing dip in the natural jacuzzi pool along the way.
- In the afternoon, you have the option of taking another guided trek or water tubing down Danum River, if weather permits.
- After dinner, venture out on a night walk along one of the surrounding nature trails.
Day 3: Fairy Falls / Serpent Falls / Segama River / Night Safari Drive or Walk
- Start your day with a guided trek to Fairy Falls and Serpent Falls where you can enjoy a swim in the cool, cascading waters.
- The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. You can choose to take a guided trek along Segama River or enjoy the lodge amenities.
- Take a night safari drive or walk through the rainforest for another opportunity to spot nocturnal animals.
Day 4: Morning Walk / Afternoon Trek / Night Walk
- You can choose to sleep in or embark on an early morning walk through the rainforest to spot wildlife like orang utan, pygmy elephants, hornbills, and more.
- The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Explore the rainforest on another guided trek or unwind in the comforts of Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
Day 5: Morning Walk / Lahad Datu
- Sleep in or venture out on a final trek through the rainforest.
- Check out and transfer back to Lahad Datu – your tour ends here.
Things To Bring
- Comfortable cotton T-shirts paired with outdoor pants (breathable, quick-dry material in earthy tones)
- Raincoat or poncho
- Cap or hat
- Insect Repellent
- Good Trekking Shoes
- Leech Socks
- Head lamp or flashlight
- Drybag or waterproof bag(to keep trek bag content dry)
- Swimwear
- Binoculars
- Personal First Aid Kit, Toiletries, and Medications
Before departing from Lahad Datu, you may ask your driver to take you to a local sundry shop to buy “adidas kampung”, locally made rubber shoes that are considered to be the ideal footwear for trekking through Bornean tropical terrain.
Important Things to Note
- This package is based on join-in basis of shared guide and transport vehicle. Private Guide or Tour is available upon request at a reasonable fee. Please inform us when making the bookings.
- Activities are subject to weather conditions and may be re-organised to best meet operational situations.
- Departure time is approximate and varies from different hotels due to traffic conditions, please reconfirm with our staffs. Should the transport be delayed, please call the relevant telephone number as stated on the voucher before making alternative arrangements.
- Phone and internet coverage is available but extremely limited. Be prepared to be without phone coverage for the duration of your trip.
- Tipping is like giving a hug. Although it’s never expected, it’s always very much appreciated.
